Bachelor’s Program in Islamic Philosophy and Theology
- Introduction
Considering the nature of the sacred Islamic Revolution of Iran, the academic needs of universities and seminaries, and the doctrinal and cultural requirements of society, there is no doubt a need for knowledgeable and expert thinkers who, in addition to having a full understanding and mastery of Islamic philosophy, are also familiar with and proficient in important philosophical schools.
Imam Sadiq University, in order to achieve the stated objectives and train motivated and capable students for promoting advanced theoretical foundations of Islam in religious and doctrinal issues, as well as educating experts able to respond to doctrinal questions, has taken steps to revise and develop the curriculum and course syllabi for the field of Islamic Philosophy and Theology. This was done to align the program with the regulations of the Council for the Development and Advancement of Humanities and the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, with the following specifications.
- Necessity and Importance of the Field
The unique position of philosophical knowledge in Islamic thought, the necessity of training experts and thinkers capable of addressing questions rooted in individuals' religious beliefs, and society's need for competent forces in teaching doctrinal and Islamic wisdom subjects tailored to contemporary societal changes have led to the revision of the Islamic Philosophy and Theology program.
- Field Objectives
The Bachelor’s program in Islamic Philosophy and Theology is one of the educational programs within the higher education system and, consequently, at Imam Sadiq. Its primary goal is to elevate philosophical knowledge while teaching philosophy based on Islamic principles. The program has been structured to ensure the following objectives are met in harmony:
- Comprehensive and precise introduction to Islamic philosophy;
- Training knowledgeable professors to teach the syllabus and texts of rational sciences in seminaries and scientific centers;
- Educating specialists in Islamic philosophy for roles as academic staff in other scientific centers;
- Training experts and researchers in Islamic philosophy and theology.
Cognitive Objectives:
- Familiarizing students with various philosophical concepts and schools and methods of reasoning about existing topics;
- Familiarity with theological issues and theological groups;
- Analysis and examination of classical and modern theological texts and sources.
Attitudinal Objectives:
- Strengthening faith and religious knowledge by fostering a healthy doctrinal environment;
- Encouraging students to understand pure religious truths;
- Responding to doubts and doctrinal questions in society.
Skill-Based Objectives:
- Enabling students to conduct research on religious topics, argue fundamental philosophical issues, and critically evaluate different viewpoints;

- Conducting research on Philosophical-Quranic and philosophical-theological topics.

Upon completion of this program, graduates will have the necessary foundation to pursue Master’s studies in Islamic Philosophy and Theology, specializing in Islamic Philosophy, Islamic Theology, Comparative Theology, Islamic Mysticism, Islamic Philosophy and Wisdom, Shiite Theology, Shiite Studies with orientations in theology, history, sociology, Islamic sects, and other related fields at other higher education institutions for further specialized and philosophical studies.

- Program Duration
The continuous Bachelor’s program in “Islamic Philosophy and Theology” lasts 8 semesters (four years), during which each student is required to complete 48 credits in Islamic and general courses, 22 credits in foreign language courses, 15 credits in foundational courses, 63 credits in specialized courses, and 10 credits in elective courses according to the structured program.
